Heredity Assignment For this assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of heredity by comparing and contrasting two organisms with different modes of reproduction. Most plants reproduce asexually while most animals reproduce sexually. Choose two organisms that reproduce asexually (either by budding, regeneration, vegetative, etc) and one organism that reproduces sexually; the three organisms must be all plants OR all animals. You may choose one of the following three assignments to complete individually or with a partner.
Presentation Date: January 13, 2010
1. A large (22” X 34”) poster presented to the class 2. A Power Point presentation (6-12 slides) 3. Wiki Page (webpage) presented to the class
Required Elements: □Your name(s), date and title □3-5 minute presentation □Mug shots (pictures or drawings) of chosen organisms □Explains why reproduction is essential for all living things □Describes the major characteristics of each organism in terms of a combination of traits. □Explains in detail how each organism inherits their combination of traits… Where is the hereditary information located? How are traits determined? □Compares and contrasts inheritance of traits for each mode of reproduction… □How many parents are involved? □How many offspring are produced in a given amount of time? □What is similar and different at the cellular level (e.g. mitosis versus meiosis, fertilization, etc)? □Are the offspring genetically identical? Why or why not? Explain. □At least two advantageous and two disadvantages of each mode of reproduction. For example, you can provide the positives and negatives for… □One parent versus two parents □The number of offspring produced in a given amount of time □Lifespan (does one live longer?) □Genetically identical offspring versus genetically different offspring □Use diagrams, animations, videos, etc where appropriate and necessary □Bibliography (Works Cited): you should have at least 3 sources listed correctly for your bibliography. Cite any sources that are not your own (DO NOT plagiarize!).
